You’ve decided that you’re eloping to Gatlinburg (great choice!), you’ve started saving locations on Pinterest, and you’re dreaming about those beautiful mountain views. But after helping couples plan Gatlinburg elopements, I’ve learned there are a few things that don’t always make it into the highlight reels, and they’re often the things that have the biggest impact on your wedding day.
Don’t worry, none of these are deal breakers. In fact, they’re the kinds of things I walk every couple through as we plan their elopement together. So before you pick a date, book a cabin, or start building your timeline, here are a few things I think every couple should know.

Sunrise Might Be Worth It When Eloping to Gatlinburg
I know an early alarm isn’t everyone’s idea of a dream wedding morning, but hear me out. Sunrise in the Smokies is a completely different experience than the middle of the day. The park is quieter, the air is cooler, and you’ll often have so much more space to enjoy the moment together.
As a Gatlinburg photographer, it’s one of my favorite times of da. Not just because the light is beautiful, but because your wedding day feels so much more relaxed when you’re not sharing your ceremony with a crowd of visitors.

The Weather Has a Mind of Its Own
One thing I’ve learned after planning dozens of elopements in the Smokies is that the weather likes to keep us on our toes. It’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, fog, clouds, or even a quick rain shower all in the same day. Especially during the spring and summer months.
The good news? We plan for it. When I’m helping couples build their timeline, we’re always thinking through backup options and leaving room for flexibility if the forecast changes. And honestly, some of my favorite wedding days have been the ones where the weather didn’t go exactly as planned. Fog drifting through the mountains or low clouds hanging over the ridges can create some of the most beautiful, moody scenery you just can’t replicate on a perfectly clear day.
My advice is simple: come prepared for changing weather, but don’t let it stress you out. The Smokies have a way of showing off no matter what the forecast says.

You Don’t Have to Hike Miles to Have an Incredible Elopement
One of the biggest misconceptions about eloping to Gatlinburg is that you have to hike to a remote mountaintop to have an amazing experience.
While I love a good hike, it’s definitely not the only way to have an unforgettable wedding day in the Smokies. Some of my favorite ceremonies have taken place just steps from the parking area, while others have been at cozy mountain lodges surrounded by family and friends. There are so many beautiful locations around Gatlinburg that don’t require a long hike, and they still offer incredible views and that peaceful mountain feel.
When we’re planning your elopement, we’ll find a location that fits the kind of experience you want to have, not one that checks a box or looks good on social media.

Your Photographer Does More Than Take Photos
One thing that surprises a lot of couples is just how much planning goes into an elopement. Long before your wedding day, I’m helping couples narrow down locations, build timelines around the best light, figure out permit requirements, recommend local vendors, and create backup plans in case the weather changes.
By the time your wedding day arrives, my goal is for you to feel like everything has already been taken care of so you can focus on being present with each other. That’s why I have started offering planning services in addition to my photography.
Don’t get me wrong! The photos are important, of course. But helping create a day that feels relaxed and intentional is just as important to me.

The Little Moments Will Be the Ones You Remember
The mountain views might be what bring you to Gatlinburg, but they usually aren’t the only thing couples remember from their wedding day.
When I deliver a gallery, it’s often the in-between moments that become favorites. The nervous excitement while getting ready. Laughing together during the drive between locations. The hugs after your ceremony. The quiet moments when you finally have a chance to take it all in.
Those little moments may not be the reason you chose to elope in the Smokies, but they’re often the ones that mean the most years later.

Your Elopement Should Feel Like You
One of the reasons I love planning and photographing Gatlinburg elopements is that no two wedding days ever look exactly alike. Some couples hike before sunrise, while others celebrate in a cozy mountain lodge with their closest family. Some spend the afternoon exploring the national park, while others head back to their cabin to enjoy a quiet dinner together.
There’s no checklist for the “perfect” elopement. The best wedding day is the one that reflects your relationship, your priorities, and the way you want to celebrate this new chapter together.
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s that planning an elopement isn’t about copying what you’ve seen online. It’s about creating an experience that feels true to you. And that’s exactly what I love helping couples do. So, if you think we would be a good fit, reach out! I’d love to help plan your Gatlinburg elopement.
