You’ve nailed down that you’re getting married in the Smokies (yay!), and now it’s time to choose the backdrop for your wedding day. If you’ve narrowed it down to Cades Cove and the Foothills Parkway, you’re already looking at two of my favorite places to photograph elopements!

The truth is, there’s no wrong choice. Each location offers something completely different, and the best fit depends on the kind of experience you’re hoping to have. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each so you can decide which one feels most like you.

Why You’ll Love a Cades Cove Elopement

There’s a reason Cades Cove is one of the most popular places in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It offers a little bit of everything that we love about East Tennessee. I’m talking historic buildings, mountain views, open fields, winding roads, and the chance to see wildlife along the way.

One of my favorite things about photographing elopements here is how much variety you can experience without leaving the loop. You can start your day at a historic church, stop for portraits in a wide-open meadow, and finish with mountain views. All within the same area, meaning more time for photos and celebration!

Pros of Cades Cove

  • Beautiful mountain backdrops in every season
  • Historic cabins, churches, and barns that add character to your photos
  • Frequent wildlife sightings, including deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional black bear
  • A peaceful, storybook feel that feels quintessentially Smoky Mountains
  • Plenty of opportunities for portraits throughout the loop

Things to Consider

As beautiful as Cades Cove is, it does require a little more planning. The 11-mile loop road is one-way, which means once you’re in, you’re committed to driving the entire loop. During the fall or on holiday weekends, that drive can take several hours due to traffic.

If privacy is important to you, I almost always recommend planning a sunrise ceremony or choosing a weekday for Cades Cove. You’ll have a much quieter experience and won’t spend nearly as much time sitting in traffic.

Why You’ll Love the Foothills Parkway

If your dream is standing on an overlook with endless mountain views stretching in every direction, the Foothills Parkway is hard to beat. This location feels a little more relaxed than Cades Cove. Instead of following a loop road, you’ll find several scenic overlooks along the parkway, making it easy to build a flexible timeline without feeling rushed.

It’s also one of my favorite places for sunset portraits because the evening light across the mountains is absolutely beautiful. Even after the sun dips behind the ridges, the sky stays softly lit, giving us plenty of time to capture those dreamy blue mountain views without feeling rushed.

Pros of a Foothills Parkway Elopement

  • Sweeping panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains
  • Easy access to multiple overlooks
  • Gorgeous sunrise and sunset light
  • Less traffic than Cades Cove
  • Flexible timeline with minimal driving between portrait locations
  • Great option for couples who want mountain views without a long hike

Things to Consider

While the views are incredible, the Foothills Parkway has a different feel than Cades Cove. You won’t find the historic churches, cabins, or wide-open valleys that make Cades Cove so unique. Instead, the focus is almost entirely on dramatic mountain scenery.

Some overlooks also have limited parking, so timing still matters. Especially during peak fall color.

Which Location Has More Crowds?

This is probably the biggest difference between the two. Cades Cove is one of the most visited areas in the national park, and during peak fall season, it’s not uncommon for the loop road to take two to four hours to drive. Summer weekends and holiday weekends can also be especially busy.

The Foothills Parkway tends to feel much quieter. While you’ll still see visitors at the overlooks, especially around sunset, it’s generally easier to find space and enjoy a slower pace.

This is where a little flexibility can really pay off. If your schedule allows, choosing a weekday (especially in the spring or fall) can make your elopement feel much more relaxed. Fewer people, less traffic, and more opportunities to simply enjoy the mountains together.

Which Location Is Better for Photos?

The honest answer? Neither, they’re just different.

A Cades Cove elopement feels timeless. Between the historic buildings, open fields, wildlife, and mountain views, your gallery has a little bit of everything. If you love variety and want your photos to feel like a day spent exploring the Smokies, Cades Cove is hard to beat.

A Foothills Parkway elopement is all about the views. The overlooks create dramatic, expansive images that put the mountains front and center. If your dream has always been to stand together overlooking layers of blue ridges stretching into the distance, this location delivers exactly that.

So… Which One Should You Choose?

If a couple tells me they want to spend the day exploring, love the idea of historic cabins and churches, and don’t mind taking things slow, I’ll usually recommend Cades Cove.

If they tell me they want breathtaking mountain views, an easier timeline, and a little more flexibility throughout the day, the Foothills Parkway is often my first suggestion.

At the end of the day, there’s no “better” location, only the one that’s the best fit for your vision. And if you are unsure of which to choose, reach out! This is literally what I do all day, I help couples just like you plan stunning Gatlinburg elopements!
