Gatlinburg is know for its close proximity to the Smoky Mountains, wildlife viewing, scenic drive, and exciting entertainment including night life. So, if you are looking for Great Smoky Mountains honeymoon activities, you have come to the right place!

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park

It’s what drew you to this breathtaking destination, so why not take the time to explore it beyond your wedding day? Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a scenic stroll, the Smoky Mountains offer something for everyone. Stunning trails, secluded romantic spots, and unforgettable views. In the summer, you can cool off with a peaceful walk through a mountain creek, while fall surrounds you with the most vibrant autumn colors. No matter the season, the beauty of the mountains is yours to enjoy!

Honeymoon Hikes

Speaking of exploring the Smoky Mountains, can I recommend a few of my favorite hikes for honeymooners?

If you are looking for an easier hike, more like a stroll, that allows you to take in the beauty of the area with out breaking a sweat I recommend starting with Laurel Falls Trail. It is a 2.6 mile roundtrip paved path leading to a stunning 80 foot waterfall, making it perfect for less experiences hikers. Kephart Prong Trail also offers a short, scenic hike with romantic footbridges that cross over creeks. Then, if you are looking for breathtaking views, Clingmans Dome provides a half-mile paved path to the highest point in the Smokies! Here you can take in panoramic mountain scenery and feel like you are literally on top of the world!

Now, if you are looking for more of an epic adventure, I have a few more challenging hikes for you! One of the most famous is Charlies Bunion, an 8 mile round-trip trek along the Appalachian Trail that offers panoramic mountain vistas at the summit. For an even bigger challenge, Mt. LeConte via Alum Cave Trail is a must. You’ll be gaining over 2,700 feet in elevation over 5.5 miles! This hike takes you past dramatic rock formations, through lush forests, and up to one of the park’s most iconic peaks. And if you’re looking for solitude, Rocky Top via Anthony Creek Trail is a strenuous but rewarding 13.9 mile hike with breathtaking views. These hikes aren’t for the faint of heart, but for those honeymooners who take them on, the reward is well worth the effort!

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

One of the most magical experiences you can share as newlyweds in the Smoky Mountains is spotting wildlife together in its natural habitat. Imagine a quiet morning drive through Cades Cove where you might catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer grazing in the mist, wild turkeys wandering the fields, or even a black bear making its way through the trees, all from the comfort of your car. For a more secluded and intimate experience, take a scenic drive along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The peaceful setting is perfect for an early morning or sunset wildlife sighting. If you’re looking for something truly special, visit Cataloochee Valley, here you can watch majestic elk grazing in the golden evening light. It’s a breathtaking and romantic moment to share with your love. Whether you’re strolling hand in hand or enjoying the view from a cozy cabin, wildlife encounters in the Smokies add a touch of wonder and adventure to your Great Smoky Mountains honeymoon.

Scenic Drives

If you would prefer a more comfortable way to explore the park, then scenic drives are for you! This is a great way to have a “down day” with a low-key itinerary, but still get to see the incredible views without the need for long hikes. Cades Cove Loop Road is an 11-mile one-way loop that showcases historic cabins, picturesque meadows, and abundant wildlife. However, this loop is one way and can have a bit of traffic at times. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a beautiful 5.5-mile drive that winds through lush forests and past cascading waterfalls, with plenty of pull-off spots for photos. And for those who want to experience the park’s highest elevations, Newfound Gap Road gives you an unforgettable drive through mountain ridges with stunning overlooks and picnic areas to enjoy along the way!

Outdoor Adventure

In addition to the many trails and adventures in the National Park, the Smokies also have tons of attractions for adrenaline seekers! Making your Great Smoky Mountains honeymoon even more memorable! Here are a few of my favorites:

Ziplining and Aerial Adventure Parks

With the elevations we have in the Smokies ziplining is a must-try activity! Anakeesta in Gatlinburg offers an epic zipline course with stunning mountain views. In addition, they offer dining options and are open day and night! CLIMB Works is another fantastic option, featuring longer and higher zipline routes that will give you a bird’s-eye view of the lush forest below. These adventure parks also include treetop rope courses and sky bridges, adding an extra layer of excitement!

Whitewater Rafting and Tubing

This one is especially for my summer brides and grooms! During those hot summer days whitewater rafting and tubing give you a much needed relief to the heat! The Pigeon River is a top spot for rafting, with guided tours available for both beginners and experienced rafters. For a more laid-back experience, tubing along the Little River in Townsend is a fantastic way to float downstream while enjoying the beautiful scenery. This also happens to be one of my personal favorites! Keep in mind that many outfitters provide tubes and safety gear, so you don’t have to worry about the logistics!

Horseback Riding Through the Mountains

For a uniquely romantic way to explore the Smokies, consider horseback riding! There are several stables in the area, such as Sugarlands Riding Stables and Cades Cove Riding Stables. Both offer guided horseback tours through scenic trails. These excursions allow you to experience the quiet beauty of the mountains, winding through forests, across creeks, and even past historic homesteads. It’s a peaceful and immersive way to explore with a touch of romance!
